Kramer, Samuel N.

Kramer, Samuel N.
(1897-1990)
The twentieth century's leading archaeologist of Sumerian artifacts and translator of Sumerian documents. Long a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, Kramer first began digging in Iraq in 1930. Over time he became increasingly adept at translating ancient Sumerian cuneiform texts and was particularly noted for his efforts to locate and translate neglected tablets lying in museums around the world. In one celebrated incident, he showed that pieces of a tablet in Istanbul, Turkey, were part of the same tablet to which pieces in Philadelphia belonged. He was also the first scholar to translate parts of the law code of Ur-Nammu, which predates the Babylonian king Hammurabi's law code. Kramer wrote many books, the most famous and influential of which is History Begins at Sumer.
